Estes Park Engagement Session
Many weddings happen in Estes Park and we’ve shot a few. But, Brittany and Nick liked the idea of engagement photos done in the small town at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. After making photos in town we talked about heading toward the National Park or perhaps to the Chapel on the Rock at the St. Malo Retreat Center. We loved the idea.
We met behind the shops along Big Thompson Avenue and made our way along the walking plaza that follows the river, stopping whenever a background caught our eye or the light was just right.
Once we exhausted all the spots along the river, we decided to chase the light to the Chapel on the Rock where we might get a good sunset. After a quick 20 minute drive uphill and to the south of Estes Park we unloaded our gear and looked toward the sky and hoped.
The Chapel on the Rock, formally called Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel, had a transporting effect. And, perhaps, Brittany’s red coat added to the timeless feel, but at times, it almost felt like I was in Italy amongst the centuries-weathered buildings of some small Alpine village.
As we set up lights things got a little more interesting to the south. Subtle peaches and reds broke through the dark clouds but nothing too dramatic. Eric worked a scene he was interested in for a bit and, finally, the sky offered up gorgeous red light as the we photographed and watched the sun die away to the west.
Half the fun of shooting engagement photos is finding the perfect location. Eric and I love scouting ahead of time to be sure we find a spot to match your vision. If you have an idea for a great engagement shoot, whether it’s inspired by a Italian alpine village or you want something more urban, give us a call.
